Stuart Penrose is a hands-on domestic and heritage roofing specialist with over three decades of experience working directly on period and modern homes across Northern Ireland. Having stripped and rebuilt roofs that have performed for 80–100 years, he knows what has worked for a hundred years — and, just as importantly, which details need to be improved for the next hundred as our climate changes.
This experience informs every design decision: copper instead of lead for durability and environmental reasons, zinc instead of PVC or timber to eliminate ongoing maintenance, and careful assessment of ventilation and roof voids regardless of membrane or roof type. Every roof is treated as a complete system, not a collection of products. It’s an approach shaped by experience that can’t be bought, copied, or shortcut.

Stuart began replacing traditional lead flashing with copper, lead has a high thermal movement problem that can cause splits and require replacing, with our temperatures exceeding records year on year and set to continue to rise ,Copper is the ideal solution.
Harvesting rainwater from the roof area will also become important in the near future, Copper does not poison our water, there is a very good reason mains water doesn’t not get feed from lead pipes!
